Tips for summer driving
Before leaving try to plan your route and have regular breaks.
Service your car properly, topping up all fluids such as engine oil, water, brake fluid and engine coolant. Also check all lights and wipers are working, and that tyres are in good condition and at proper air pressure – including the spare.
Fill up with fuel before you set off, but not to the brim. Because in hot temperatures, the fuel will expand and overflow.
Store an emergency kit in the boot including a flash light, jump leads and a reflective triangle, in case you do have to deal with a breakdown.
Take something to eat and drink, just in case you are unlucky enough to get caught in any traffic jams.
Always leave plenty of room between you and the car in front. And remember when your car is loaded more than normal, its braking distance will be increased.
Don't eat or drink at the wheel, but you could try sucking some sugary sweets to give you a temporary energy boost.
Don't eat a huge meal before setting off, as this can make you drowsy. And it goes without saying - don't drink alcohol or take drugs either!
Make sure you allow a lot more time for your journey. The last thing you want is for a minor delay to cause a stressful and dangerous race against the clock.
If you have a pet make sure they are comfortable, not too hot, sensibly restrained and that they get an opportunity for a drink, and to 'stretch their legs' along with the rest of the family.
